Quel point commun entre les Hébreux, Martin Eden, Romain Gary, la muse de Baudelaire Jeanne Duval, Modigliani, Hercule Poirot ou les rôles interprétés par Ava Gardner ? Tous sont des métèques. Un mot qui, en Grèce antique, désigne simplement celui qui a changé de cité, avant de devenir une insulte sous la plume de Charles Maurras puis d'être réhabilité par la chanson de Georges Moustaki en 1969. Le métèque prend alors cette signification d'autre par essence, d'étranger générique.
C'est ce mot, aujourd'hui un peu désuet, qu'Abnousse Shalmani vient revaloriser. Car le métèque est en réalité bien plus qu'un mot. C'est la figure de transfuge par excellence : cet autre aux semelles de vent, qui sait qu'il devra repartir un jour, celui qu'on ne peut jamais enfermer dans un seul lieu ou une seule identité, voué à intriguer, voire à effrayer, à trouver une embuche dans le regard de l'autre.
Celui qui vit dans une identité mouvante, perpétuellement en exil, qui procure une authentique liberté pour peu qu'on se donne la peine d'essayer de l'habiter. Cet essai élève le métèque au rang d'esthétique à part entière, celle du pas de côté. Dans ce voyage littéraire et cinématographique, l'auteure nous fait visiter son Panthéon personnel, d'Hérode à Salman Rushdie, d'Esmeralda à Albert Camus.
Un éloge au souffle ample, qui résonne particulièrement aujourd'hui dans son "amour des sans-frontières, des sans-pays, des sans-terres" , une ode à l'imaginaire.
